I always wanted to be invisible. But I never expected it to really happen. When I was little I used to prowl around the house pretending to be the One And Only Invisible Detective. I could see everybody and nobody could see me. That was better than even Sherlock Holmes. . . . But all that was before I got mixed up with Dr. Poof and my friend Kathleen's weird Uncle Terence O'Toole. That's when I really did get invisible. And that's when all the trouble began.

The Invisible Kid And The Killer Cat (Book #2 of The Invisible Kid Series)

by Terry and Wayne Baltz

Book cover for The Invisible Kid And The Killer Cat Who's that strange lady with the impossible cat who's come to rent the spare room from Uncle Terence? . . . More mystery and adventure for Casey and her friends.

Eddie turned the knob and I pushed the door open slowly. Bumps sniffed and wagged his tail, then led us into the dark and deserted room. We tiptoed past furniture that lurked like tombstones. Shadows crept up the walls. Something black, with glowing yellow eyes, sprang at us from the gloom. We stumbled out into the hall. The door slammed shut after us. We tore down the stairs, careening off each other like billiard balls, and landed in a heap at the bottom.

Slim Conspiracy: Tandem Products

by Steve Slaton

Book cover for Slim Conspiracy The epidemic that public health officials call HIV/AIDS is a tragedy, is clouded by persecution and misinformation, and is raging out of control. Or is it? This fictional story leads the reader to question scientific "facts" and reveals powerful financial incentives to fool the public about AIDS and antibiotic-resistant microbe evolution. This novel also demonstrates methods and means of collusion and rewrites what we thought was recent history, revealing a much larger, real epidemic -- which can be airborne. This book honors those who have the courage to challenge the HIV "party line" and offers them publicity. The most notable of these is The Group for the Scientific Reappraisal of the HIV/AIDS Hypothesis, whose web site is www.virusmyth.net. While the persons, places, and events described are imaginary, the author took every effort to make them historically accurate and to describe science authentically.

"A good read."--Dr. Porter Woods, Ph.D. in Drama, Yale

About the author:

Steve Slaton is a fifth generation resident of northern Colorado where this international story plays out. He has Bachelor's degrees in microbiology and chemistry, has worked in the pharmaceutical industry, and tenaciously pursues truth through research. In 1998 he sought librarian assistance in finding a book of fiction on HIV/AIDS. He found nothing. He started writing. In February 2004, he again asked a librarian to find any HIV/AIDS fiction in print. He could still find nothing. He wonders why.

Terror Before the Dawn

by Bertie Woodward

Book cover for Terror Before the Dawn "Who would dream that one day could bring such drastic changes in my life?" thought Karyn as she scrambled up a steep cliff to escape the raging floodwaters of the Big Thompson. A terror she had never known gripped her.

Eric, an Air Force pilot, never dreamed how tragic circumstances would bring them together again. But after they struggle together through the terrors of that Rocky Mountain disaster, Eric is called overseas on a classified mission.

What does his sudden silence mean? Has he forgotten her--moved on to another pilot adventure? Should she respond to Terry, the man with a flashing smile and boyish charms?

Will faith and love survive the obstacles of time and distance?

She and her pastor-husband ministered in Colorado, Nebraska and Wyoming until retirement. Edited by David G. Clark

Book cover for A Horse Can't Buck in Sand: Accounts of Western Country Life in the Early 20th Century They were a generation born, raised and dwelling in the country, in the plains and mountains of the vast Rocky Mountain Front Range. Some were native to the area, but most were from elsewhere: Kansas, Wyoming, Missouri, Illinois, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Tennessee. They were born around 1900, grew up before World War I, endured the Great Depression and Dust Bowl. Toward the end of their lives, they resided in and around Bellvue, Colorado and the surrounding Pleasant Valley. Among them were homesteaders, cowboys, loggers, storekeepers, freight haulers, railroad workers, and prospectors. For most, their formal education ended with the eighth grade, yet collectively they possessed a wealth of knowledge about survival in harsh environments. Their stories relate hardship, unrelieved work, and frequent tragedy. At the same time they show humor, joy in living, and the satisfaction that comes with meeting and surviving life's challenges.

About the editor:

David G. Clark is professor emeritus at Colorado State University. He lives in Bellvue, Colorado, with his wife, Alice, who is adult education director and parish assistant at Plymouth Congregational Church of Fort Collins.

Those Crazy Pioneers: With the Life and Times of Lady Moon & Vignettes of History

by Lafi Miller

Book cover for Those Crazy Pioneers Nearly 30 years of historical fact-finding, as well as some wry observations, have gone into this fascinating book. The author has carefully documented many of the colorful stories about the area's pioneers. Centered around the history of the Livermore and Red Feather Lakes area, many of the stories have never before appeared in print. Miller and his wife Jo, both 84, personally interviewed neighbors, friends and family of many of the book's personalities, and they also gathered numerous details from newspapers of the day. The book also has a complete index of names and places. Their research on the infamous Lady Catherine Moon makes a major chapter in the book.

About the author:

Lafi Miller has lived in the Fort Collins and Red Feather area since he was four, so he considers himself a native.

Lafi has been a carpenter, construction foreman, and the owner of a construction business. He and his wife, Juliana, established the Miller Manor Dance Studio in Fort Collins, which they operated for 35 years. This year, Lafi and Juliana were inducted into the Square Dance Hall Of Fame.

During the 1960s, the Millers became interested in local history. They started doing research and recording their findings about 1970, and, as you can see, local history is still dear to their hearts.

Ranch Histories of Livermore and Vicinity 1884 - 1956

by the Livermore Woman's Club

Book cover for Ranch Histories of Livermore and Vicinity 1884 - 1956 Over the years, persons doing historical research of Larimer County and those who are just interested readers have found this little "brand book," as it is often called, invaluable. It was one of the few early sources of historical materials for many of these ranches and their families. The "brand book" was first printed by the Larimer County Stockgrowers Association in July 1956. Its title was "The Larimer County Stockgrowers Association 1884-1956." Now in its third printing, the quality of the book was improved using digital scanning of text and images from the original "booklet." The "Errata and Additions" previously listed in the back of the book were incorporated into the text. The brands, area map and advertisements that originally supported the booklet were retained. The advertisements illustrate important community interest and activity of the time. We hope this new printing will extend the community's interest in local history.

The Livermore Woman's Club:

"How important this book is to save our recorded heritage! Thanks to the Livermore Woman's Club for their continued efforts." -Elizabeth"Liz" Case

"This book is truly an accurate history of the area at the time it was written. Juliana ("Jo" Sloan) and I have used it with confidence as a reference since it was first published."-Lafi Miller, author of "Those Crazy Pioneers"

Red Feather Lakes; the first hundred years, 1871 - 1971

by Evadene Burris Swanson

Book cover for Red Feather Lakes; the first hundred years, 1871 - 1971 The suggestion to write a history of Red Feather Lakes was Ted Dunning's. His material furnished the inspiration for delving further into available written records and for interviewing those who have graciously shared memories, letters, diaries, and photographs.

We have tried to capture some of the dreams of yesterday by searching for the remains--the foundations of an old sawmill and the ditch which brought its water, the platform of a golf tee perched on huge boulders, the cupola observatory on a log cabin. The record of hopes, plans, disappointments, accomplishments, and failures is an exciting one.

--Evadene Burris Swanson, 1971

About the author:

Dr. Evadene Burris Swanson published numerous articles and books on history since her graduate student days in history at the University of Minnesota. She taught history at colleges in Illinois, New York and New South Wales, Australia.

She authored articles and books, including "Where's Manhattan" for Colorado Magazine and the book "Fort Collins Yesterdays." She was best known for her diligent research and attention to detail. These traits will become evident as you read through the pages of this book and you will feel that you, too, are there in person, taking part in the activities. Evadene Swanson passed away in 2001.
